an extra five minutes
whenever I have an extra 5 minutes, I always call my grandma
she always answers, “hey girl” and I reply “hey girlllll”
she grew up on a chicken farm in southern missouri
she wanted to become a doctor
but her high school counselor told her that women don’t do that
she got married at 18, had three children by 24
she sold tupperware and other 1980s schemes
when her children were grown she enrolled in college
by the time I was born she had graduated with a MBA
she never became a doctor but she became vice president of sales for a pharmaceutical company
I have always known I belonged to a matriarchal family
I didn’t truly become conscious of her power until I was in college myself
my grandma is extremely fair, committed, and humble
she is certain of her goals and quietly accomplishes them
her drive has always inspired my own
she is always reminding me to slow down
